LAKEWOOD, Colo. -- A Lakewood, Colorado, couple says their car was stolen while they were getting ready to go to the hospital because the mom-to-be thought she was in labor, CBS Denver reported.
Turns out, she wasn’t actually in labor yet, but they didn’t know that at the time, and the thief left the family without transportation at a critical time.
“To have your car stolen while you’re in labor. Dispatch kept asking me, ‘What’s your emergency?’ I was like, ‘I got my car stolen, and I’m having a baby,’” said Codie Rayl. “You can pick either one.”
The couple had loaded up their overnight bags and the car seat for the newborn, then went back inside for a moment to get their 2-year-old, and that’s when the thief struck.
“We looked out the window and we saw the car backing up and it just took off,” said Rayl.
Police in Lakewood said there are no suspects in the case.
Baby Grace wasn’t born the day the Rayl family’s car was stolen, but her arrival at Swedish Medical Center has been a blessing.
For now, the family is planning on using taxis and the bus to get around. They hope, for Baby Grace’s sake, the car turns up so they can focus on raising their newborn daughter.
“And that’s what you did, you didn’t take away a car, you took away a family’s ability to sustain itself. You took away my ability to take my kids to their appointments,” said Rayl.
“We’re trying to finagle either getting our car back, which is ultimately the best-case scenario, or we’re going to have to figure out a way to start over,” said Rayl.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the Rayl family with their expenses.
