"Captain America: The First Avenger" brings in $4 million from midnight showings

(CBS) "Captain America: The First Avenger" stormed the overnight box office, taking in $4 million from midnight shows.

That's the highest midnight box office gross for a superhero film this summer, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Pictures: "Captain America" debuts

The film, which stars Chris Evans in the title role, debuted on 2,000 theaters early Friday morning.

"X-Men: First Class" brought in $3.4 from midnight shows, while "Green Lantern" earned $3.35 and "Thor" grossed $3.25 million.

"Captain America" is being promoted heavily at Comic-Con, where Evans introduced the movie before a special screening on Thursday. Evans told fans in attendance that film is "everything a superhero movie should be."
