Canadiens Sign Chabot, Rivet

The Montreal Canadiens signed goaltender Frederic Chabot and defenseman Craig Rivet on Monday, and also confirmed the signings of Barry Richter, Scott Lachance and Dainius Zubrus.

Chabot agreed to a two-year deal, while Rivet signed a one-year contract worth $660,000.

Rivet, who played the last five seasons with the Canadiens, had two goals and eight assists in 66 games last season.

Chabot, who was claimed by Montreal in the 1998 NHL waiver draft, played in 11 games last season, posting a 2.23 goals against average and a .915 save percentage.

The Canadiens confirmed the other signings, which were reported last week.

Richter, a 28-year-old free agent defenseman, signed a two-year contract. He played in 72 games with the New York Islanders last season, finishing with six goals and 18 assists.

Lachance, a defenseman, and Zubrus, a right wing, both re-signed with the Canadiens. Lachance, who will make $1.21 million next season, had two goals and nine assists in 76 games, while Zubrus, who will make $660,000, had six goals and 10 assists in 80 games.
