Woman accused of murdering 8-month-old son, hiding remains

FONTANA, Calif.-- A California woman was arrested for the alleged murder of her 8-month-old son after his remains were found in a storage facility, reports CBS Los Angeles.

The remains were discovered inside the Bloomington, Calif., storage facility on June 4. Investigators say the baby died about a year ago. They have not released his name or the cause of death.

Maria Torres, the baby's mother, was arrested Saturday for the baby's murder. Officials said Torres is also under investigation for fraudulently raising money from a local church and community members to cover burial fees.

Torres was arrested at her home on Williams Avenue less than a mile from the storage unit.

CBS Los Angeles reports that Torres told neighbors that her baby died about a year ago from high potassium complications.

She never held a funeral and allegedly told people she had the baby cremated. Neighbors said she then took off.

"One day and I don't know why, she just disappeared ... never found out why," said neighbor Bob Aldred.

Torres has three other kids who are now in protective custody.
