Calif. mom locks daughter in closet for 6 hours for bad grades

(CBS) - A California woman is accused of locking her daughter in a closet for six hours because she received bad grades in school.

Fox News reports Cosa Mesa police Sgt. Phil Myers said that on Oct. 29, the 32-year-old mother hit her 13-year-old daughter three times with a stick and then locked her up in the closet for six hours as punishment for her grades.

The Daily Pilot said that Sgt. Meyers did not know the girl's grades.

Authorities arrested the mother after a concerned party called police within a couple hours of the incident. She was in custody at the Orange County jail until she posted bail and was released.

Myers said the child is in the Orangewood Children & Family Center's care.

The newspaper chose not to name the mother to protect the identity of the child, who is a minor.

The mother pleaded not guilty Nov. 1, and was back in court again Tuesday. She is scheduled to be back in court in December.
