Buzz Briefs: Spielberg, Tyler Perry

Spielberg Opens Wallet In Support Of Gay Marriage

Steven Spielberg and his wife, Kate Capshaw, are the latest celebrity donors to the fight against California's November ballot initiative that would overturn the state Supreme Court decision legalizing same-sex marriage.

Spielberg and Capshaw have donated $100,000 to fight Proposition 8, they announced in a statement Monday.

"By writing discrimination into our state constitution, Proposition 8 seeks to eliminate the right of each and every citizen in our state to marry regardless of sexual orientation," the statement said. "Such discrimination has NO place in California's constitution, or any other."

Also known as the Marriage Protection Act, Proposition 8 would amend the state constitution to limit marriage to a man and a woman. If passed, it would overturn the court decision that made the state only the second in the U.S. to legalize same-sex marriage.

Brad Pitt gave the same amount to the cause last week.

Tyler Perry Donates Food To Over 1,000 Families

Writer-director Tyler Perry plans to hand out food to feed over 1,000 families at the Hosea Feed the Hungry care center on Tuesday.

Perry says he felt compelled to help out after realizing the center dedicated to feeding the poor and homeless had a shortage of food from serving a large population of working families who are struggling with the economy. He hopes his appearance will persuade more people to support his cause of providing rent, mortgage and other financial endeavors for the families.

Perry's "The Family That Preys" debuted at No. 2 on the weekend box office two weeks ago.

Alec Baldwin Book Bashes U.S. Family Court System

Alec Baldwin blamed the bitter custody battle between him and ex-wife Kim Basinger in part for the anger and frustration he was feeling when he berated his daughter in a phone message leaked to the media last year.

In the message, Baldwin called the 11-year-old a "rude, thoughtless little pig." He was apparently upset that she had missed his phone call.

"I'm disappointed, I'm ashamed to say this: You get angry," the 50-year-old actor told a crowd of about 120 people Monday at San Francisco's Commonwealth Club, where he was promoting his new book, "A Promise to Ourselves."

"I wanted to see my daughter," he said.

In the book, Baldwin rails against the family court system in Los Angeles, offers advice based on his own experience with divorce litigation and talks about how one parent can turn a child against another parent.

Baldwin said he has apologized to his daughter, Ireland, for the phone message, which he said was wrong and had "horrified" him. But he said it never should have been released without his permission.

Baldwin has blamed Basinger, 54, for leaking the tape. She has denied the claim.

Baldwin won an Emmy on Sunday for outstanding lead actor in a comedy series for his role as TV executive Jack Donaghy in NBC's "30 Rock." He snagged a Golden Globe for the same role last year.

David Blaine Is "Hanging Out" In Central Park

What's David Blaine up to? Oh, just hanging around.

The magician-daredevil proclaimed he was "doin' all right" after starting his latest endurance challenge Monday - 60 hours hanging upside-down, without a net, above Wollman Rink in New York's Central Park.

Blaine kept smiling while describing the "enormous push of blood" that made it feel like his head was "about to explode."

As a child, Blaine was intrigued to learn that Harry Houdini had dangled from a crane by his ankles while escaping a straitjacket.

Blaine is scheduled to exit from his perch at the climax of a live, two-hour ABC special, "David Blaine: Dive of Death," on Wednesday.
