Buzz Briefs: Salma Hayek, Steven Adler

Salma Hayek, Pinault Call Off Engagement

Salma Hayek has called off her engagement to French businessman Francois-Henri Pinault, her representative said Friday.

The couple announced their plans to wed in March 2007, and welcomed a daughter, Valentina Paloma Pinault, several months later.

"We are sad to announce the engagement of Salma Hayek and Francois-Henri Pinault has been canceled," publicist Cari Ross said in a statement. "There will be no further comment."

The Mexican-born Hayek, 41, has starred in films such as "Frida," "Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over" and "After the Sunset."

She is one of the executive producers of ABC's "Ugly Betty" and the chief executive of Ventanazul, a production company she formed with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc.

Pinault is the chief executive officer of the luxury goods company PPR SA, which owns high-end labels such as Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, Balenciaga and Puma.

Ex-Guns N' Roses Drummer Arrested In LA

Former Guns N' Roses drummer Steven Adler has been arrested in Hollywood for alleged drug possession.

Los Angeles police spokesman Richard French says the 43-year-old Adler was arrested around 4 a.m. Friday by officers called to a home where a man reportedly was creating a disturbance and refusing to leave.

He was jailed on $45,000 bail.

Adler has a long history of drug use. He performed on the early Guns N' Roses albums but was later fired.

Songwriter Cochran Recovering From Surgery

Songwriter Hank Cochran is recovering at a Nashville hospital following surgery to remove cancerous tumors from his pancreas and lymph node.

Cochran, 72, said the diagnosis was made very early and doctors expect him to make a full recovery.

Cochran, a native of Isola, Miss., has written several country classics including Patsy Cline's "I Fall to Pieces," Eddy Arnold's "Make the World Go Away" and George Strait's "Ocean Front Property" and "The Chair."

He is expected to remain in the hospital for several weeks.

50 Cent Passes Drug Test

Rapper 50 Cent is free to take a vacation with his son after passing a court-ordered drug test.

The 33-year-old entertainer was in a Long Island, N.Y., courtroom yesterday to ask a judge for permission to take 11-year-old Marquise on a trip next month.

A drug test was ordered, and it came back clean.

Marquise lives with his mother, Shaniqua Tompkins. She's 50 Cent's ex-girlfriend and blames him for a fire in May that destroyed the Long Island mansion where she and the boy had been living. 50 Cent has denied the accusation.

Six people, including Tompkins and Marquise, were treated for smoke inhalation after the blaze.

McCartney Appeals For Peace Over Quebec Concert

Paul McCartney told Quebec nationalists on Thursday "to smoke the pipes of peace" over their opposition to his free concert celebrating the city's 400th anniversary.

Several artists and politicians have questioned McCartney's participation in the weekend birthday celebrations of French-speaking Quebec City because of his British roots.

But McCartney said he was unmoved by their claim his presence evokes painful memories of Britain's conquest of New France, which included Quebec, in 1760.

McCartney tried to deflate the political rhetoric around Sunday's show on the Plains of Abraham, site of the pivotal 1759 battle between British General James Wolfe and France's Marquis Louis-Joseph de Montcalm.

"Come on Quebec-ins, love me baby," said McCartney.

The open-air concert is his only scheduled appearance in North America this year. Organizers are expecting a crowd of around 200,000.

Got A Brand New Bag? James Brown Items Sold In New York

Fans and collectors packed a Christie's salesroom on Thursday as more than 300 lots of Brown's belongings were sold, bringing in a total of $857,688, the auction house said. Bidding rocketed past estimates for many of the items, which included some of the Godfather of Soul's furniture, musical instruments and a poem Muhammad Ali wrote for him.

"Late Show with David Letterman" band leader Paul Shaffer bid $32,500 to win the medical bracelet, which went for more than 100 times its presale estimate, Christie's said. The bracelet said Brown was a diabetic and was allergic to penicillin.

Brown died of heart failure on Christmas Day, 2006, at age 73.

His estate has been mired in turmoil and contention. Court-appointed trustees announced in January that the singer's possessions would be auctioned, in part to pay taxes his estate owed. His former business managers tried unsuccessfully to block Thursday's sale, and Brown's children lambasted it.

Jimi Hendrix Is Coming To Guitar Hero

The Seattle-based company Experience Hendrix, which controls the rock icon's musical legacy, is providing Hendrix's music and likeness for the latest "Guitar Hero" video game, Aaron Grant, a spokesman for publisher and developer Activision and Red Octane, told The Associated Press on Thursday.

It's the first time Hendrix's likeness will be showcased in the game.

An avatar of Hendrix as well as the song "The Wind Cries Mary" and a live version of "Purple Haze," which was recorded in 1969 at the San Diego Sports Arena, will be included on "Guitar Hero World Tour" - the fourth edition of the popular game franchise scheduled for release Oct. 27.

"World Tour" will be the first "Guitar Hero" to feature playable drums and a microphone.

Experience Hendrix provided Activision and Red Octane with various songs from Hendrix, who famously played the Woodstock music festival in 1969 and died of a drug overdose in 1970. Other Hendrix tunes would be released in the future as downloadable content for the game, Grant said.

Exhibit Marks Bruce Lee's Death

Bruce Lee fans are marking the 35th anniversary of his death with an exhibit featuring movie posters, magazine covers and books about the action star.

Also among the 800 items on display are letters written by Lee that detail his life in the U.S., where he attended college and taught kung fu before returning to Hong Kong.

Danny Chan, who plays Lee in an upcoming Chinese TV series, attended the opening ceremony of the exhibit Friday. Chan said he hopes the exhibit will improve public understanding of Lee.

"A lot of people like Bruce Lee but know very little about him," he said.

Lee died July 20, 1973, in Hong Kong at age 32 from swelling of the brain. He was known for movies in which he portrayed characters who defended the Chinese and the working class from oppressors. His credits include "The Chinese Connection," "Return of the Dragon" and "Enter the Dragon."

Talks are also ongoing about turning Lee's former home in Hong Kong into a museum.
