Supermodel Campbell Cleared To Leave Brazilian Hospital

British supermodel Naomi Campbell was discharged from a Brazilian hospital Friday five days after she was rushed in for emergency surgery, Globo news reported.

It was not clear whether she had actually left Sao Paulo's Sirio-Libanes Hospital.

"She is perfectly well," Dr. Jose Aristodemo Pinotti, the Brazilian surgeon who tended to Campbell, was quoted as saying.

He said he had given her permission to leave.

Frank Sinatra Jr. Added To Walk Of Stars

Frank Sinatra Jr. has joined his famous dad and sister on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars.

The 64-year-old singer received star No. 307 Thursday on Palm Canyon Drive.

Sinatra noted that he used to play on the same street as a kid.

"This has been quite a sentimental journey," he said.

Nancy Sinatra said her brother deserves the honor because he "is practically, single-handedly, keeping the American songbook alive."

He has made numerous records, including a tribute to his late father.

Remy Ma's Assault Trial To Begin

2Jury selection will begin in New York next week in the trial of a 26-year-old rapper accused of shooting an acquaintance over missing money.

Remy Ma is accused of shooting a woman in the abdomen last July after leaving a party in Manhattan's Greenwich Village. She claimed the woman took $2,000 from her purse.

The rapper has pleaded not guilty to assault and related charges and is free on $250,000 bail. She could face up to 25 years in prison if convicted.

A Manhattan state Supreme Court justice has scheduled jury selection to begin Thursday.

The Grammy-nominated rapper's real name is Remy Smith.

UNCF To Honor Denzel Washington

3The United Negro College Fund is honoring actor Denzel Washington and his wife at its 64th anniversary dinner in New York.

The actor and Pauletta Washington will receive the Frederick D. Patterson Award for helping historically black colleges and universities and helping minorities pay for education.

The award is named for a co-founder of the United Negro College Fund and former president of what is now Tuskegee University in Alabama.

Washington recently starred in and directed "The Great Debaters." The movie was inspired by a historically black college debate team that debated an all-white team at an Ivy League university during legal segregation in the 1930s.

The UNCF dinner will be held March 7 at a Manhattan hotel.

Singer Mike Smith Dies

4Mike Smith, lead singer of Dave Clark Five, has died of pneumonia. He was 64.

Smith died Thursday, less than two weeks before the band was to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, at a hospital outside of London, said his agent, Margo Lewis.

He was admitted to the intensive care unit Wednesday morning with a chest infection, a complication from a spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed below the ribcage with limited use of his upper body. Lewis said he was injured when he fell from a fence at his home in Spain in September 2003.

Smith had been in the hospital since the accident, and was just released last December when he moved into a specially prepared home near the hospital with his wife.

Smith wrote songs as well as singing and playing keyboards for the Dave Clark Five, one of many British rock acts whose music swept across the United States in the 1960s during the so-called British Invasion.

The Beatles are the best remembered, but at the time the Dave Clark Five posed the strongest threat, commercially and critically, to their pre-eminence.

The Dave Clark Five claimed a string of U.S. hits, including "Because," "Glad All Over," and "I Like it Like That." By 1966, the band had made 12 appearances on "The Ed Sullivan Show," then a record for any British group.
