(CBS/WCBS/AP) NEW YORK - Police say a 33-year-old man was arrested and charged with murder in the weekend stabbing death of his girlfriend at their New York City apartment.

The suspect, Raul Barrera, is to be arraigned Monday. He surrendered to police on Sunday.

Police responded to the Lower Manhattan apartment shared by Barrera and 23-year-old Sarah Coit around 2:30 a.m. Sunday, after receiving 911 calls of screams coming from inside.

"We were afraid, we didn't know what was happening," a neighbor told CBS affiliate WCBS. "There was a lot of commotion."

Police say they found Coit, formerly of Greenwich, Conn., with multiple stab wounds; several knives were recovered.

She was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Police say Coit had called police once in January to complain of a verbal dispute with Barrera when the couple lived in midtown Manhattan.

Police say Coit worked as a salesperson in Manhattan; Barrerra worked in public relations.

A neighbor, 15-year-old Jason Figueroa, said he heard her yelling, "Stop, get off of me." He said he called police.
