(CBS) SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The 2-year-old boy who is reported to be the son of Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has died after allegedly being beaten by the man his mother was dating, CBS affiliate KELO reports.

Police responded to an apartment building in Sioux Falls, S.D. Wednesday evening and found the child unresponsive.

When the child was taken to the hospital, doctors found injuries consistent with abuse, reports the station.

Joseph Patterson, 27, who is the boyfriend of the child's mother, was arrested and was charged with aggravated battery of an infant and aggravated assault Friday morning. His bond was set at $750,000.

Following the boy's death, the Lincoln County State's Attorney's Office will be reviewing police reports for consideration of additional charges, reports the station.

KELO reports Patterson has a lengthy criminal record.

Sioux Falls police have not released the name of the child or his parents. However, Adrian Peterson's father told the Pioneer Press earlier Friday that the injured boy was the NFL player's son. CBS News has not independently confirmed Peterson's relationship to the child.

The Vikings said Thursday that Adrian Peterson had been excused from practice to deal with a personal matter. He left to be with his child in South Dakota, but returned to the team facility Friday.

Peterson addressed the press after practice Friday and thanked everyone for their support.

"This is a private matter, and I ask y'all to please respect my privacy and not ask at all about the situation at hand," Peterson said.
