Boy, 10, calls 911, says father driving drunk, he might jump

STONINGTON, Conn. Police in Connecticut police say a frightened 10-year-old boy called 911 to say he was considering jumping from a car his father was driving while under the influence.

Police say 49-year-old Owen Gilman, of Warwick, R.I., hit another vehicle Wednesday night on Interstate 95 in Stonington. The unidentified motorist in the other vehicle was hospitalized. His condition wasn't known Thursday.

CBS Hartford, Conn. affiliate WFSB reports the boy told police during the call his father was driving very fast he was considering jumping from the moving vehicle because it was a better option than crashing at the speeds that they were traveling.

Gilman was charged with reckless driving, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and other offenses. It wasn't clear if Gilman has a lawyer. A telephone listing for Gilman couldn't be found.

State police said there was a large amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia in the vehicle as well, the station says.

Rhode Island state police first got the call from the boy, who said he was with his 12-year-old sister.

The children were treated for lacerations.

Police said Gilman was uninjured and arrested when he failed a field sobriety test. He's being held on $35,000 bond.

The judge sternly told Gilman that if the accusations are true, the father of two "behaved horribly and should feel blessed his children are safe," WFSB says, adding that the only people there to see Gilman were his parents, and they posted his bond.
