Boxer Calls Out Fiorina for Multiple Yachts
California Sen. Barbara Boxer is taking aim at her opponent Carly Fiorina's personal wealth -- specifically her yachts -- while campaign disclosure reports show Fiorina's fortune may prove critical in her fight against the Democratic incumbent.
Boxer, the San Francisco Chronicle reports, has criticized Fiorina's choice "to become a CEO, lay off 30,000 workers, ship jobs overseas (and) have two yachts."
Fiorina, the Republican Senate challenger, formerly served as the CEO of Hewlett-Packard. Her two yachts, according to the Chronicle, are the 70-foot Alchemy V worth just over $1 million, docked in Sausalito, Calif., and the 56-foot Alchemy VI, docked in Washington, D.C.
Fiorina spokeswoman Julie Soderlund told the Chronicle, "it's ironic that Barbara Boxer, who has millions herself, would take this line of attack - it's not exactly like she's living off food stamps."
Both candidates have made the economy a central point of their campaigns, given that Californians face one of the highest unemployment rates in the nation.
The three-term Democrat has so far maintained a small lead over Fiorina in polls, though recent fundraising reports show Boxer's campaign has a solid financial edge over Fiorina's.
CBSNews.com Special Report: Campaign 2010
Boxer raised $4.6 million from April through June and began July with $11.3 million cash on hand. Fiorina, by contrast, raised $1.4 million in that same period and kicked off this month with less than $1 million. Fiorina was compelled to loan her campaign $5.5 million of her own money and may give herself more loans, according to RealClearPolitics.
Fiorina's close tail on Boxer makes the race very competitive, CBSNews.com's Election Map shows. Her viability in the typically blue state even gives Republicans a long shot of winning the 10 seats needed to take control of the Senate, the Wall Street Journal has highlighted.
