Boston TV station van strikes pedestrian on highway

(CBS) BOSTON - A man was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries Tuesday after he was hit by an SUV owned by a Boston TV station.

It happened on a main north-south highway, Route 93, just north of downtown Boston around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday.

According to CBS Boston, police said a 25-year-old man had stopped his Hyundai Elantra in the left lane, left the car and was crossing the highway on foot when he was struck by a Ford Explorer owned by WHDH-TV.

"The driver is an employee of the station," State Police said in a statement.

Investigators don't know why the Hyundai driver stopped, why he was walking across the highway or what his condition was at the time of the crash, CBS Boston reported.

"The victim's Elantra had front-end damage that suggests it was involved in a prior crash. There was no debris field at the location where it was stopped, leading to the belief that it may have been involved in (a) prior crash elsewhere," State Police said.

Police also don't know how fast the Explorer was moving when it hit the man.

The victim and the driver have not been named. In its noon newscast Tuesday, WHDH said the driver is a photographer at the station who was on duty at the time of the crash. He was not hurt.
