Bootcamp
Talk is still cheap....on the Internet.
Government officials are looking at the transmission of voice phone calls over the Internet and the odds are some regulations are on the way. One of the most recognized experts in the field, Jeff Pulver, says regulators are making a mistake...Â…
"Today, it's like a hundred billion dollar marketplace and the entire IP telephony industry from the service perspective is not going to make ten million dollars this year...let alone a billion dollars. So we're making a lot of noise about an industry which is just starting to breathe some life into itself."
What regulators are not looking at....is using voice from computer to computer over services like Internet Phone or Net Meeting. Or even using a device called Aplio phone..."It's a stand alone unit, a small box that you hook up to your phone and switch your calls from your long distance carrier to the Internet."
Olivier Zitoun, head of Aplio. With both parties using the phones, which sell for about 200 dollars apiece, you can talk long distance for hours for free. Both sides also need Internet service accounts. The quality? Paris to New York sounds like this..
"The weather is not so fine. It's gray...but no rain...."
