Boehner Likes It Plainer
House Minority Leader John A. Boehner fancies himself a simple man of simple pleasures.
As such, the Ohio Republican counts himself among the vocal detractors of the new eco-friendly cafeterias on Capitol Hill and the haute cuisine now served daily in the halls of Congress.
“We’re buying carbon credits. It reminds me of the Catholic Church in the Middle Ages. We’re buying indulgences,” Boehner, who is Catholic, said in response to a somewhat surprising question on the topic Wednesday morning.
“I like real food, food I can pronounce the name of,” he said.
Apparently, he favors bibb lettuce over arugula, and cheeseburgers over pan-roasted Chesapeake rockfish with sweet-potato-and-fennel hash.
(For the record: NBC’s Mike Viqueira pointed out that pot roast was on the menu Wednesday.)
Maybe Boehner is still a little grumpy that the Democratic majority won’t let him enjoy a cigarette (or five) in the Speaker’s Lobby.
