Boehner Delivers Veto Pledge To Bush
House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) will pay a visit to the White House Wednesday afternoon with Republican Reps. John Campbell (Calif.), Jerry Lewis (Calif.) and Jeb Hensarling (Texas) to deliver President Bush a letter in which 147 Republicans pledged to sustain his veto of any bill that contains “excessive spending.”
The letter – drafted by Campbell and Hensarling – is the latest salvo in a running battle in the House over federal spending. Congressional Republicans are trying to regain some of the credibility they lost during their 12 years in the majority by opposing some of the annual spending bills drafted by majority Democrats, aligning with the president in that fight.
But a vote last week on a measure to fund the Department of Homeland Security proved that a signature does not always equal a vote – at least not on the first go-round.
