"Blade Runner" sequel in the works?

Theatrical post for "Blade Runner"

(CBS) - I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. Even talks of a "Blade Runner" sequel!

Alcon Entertainment has nearly finalized the purchase the rights of all "Blade Runner" sequels and prequels, paving a way for more films set it the bleak world of Los Angeles, 2019.

In a written statement reproduced on TheWrap.com, Alcon co-presidents Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove said, "This is a major acquisition for our company, and a personal favorite film for both of us."

The nearly 30-year-old movie has been a cult favorite for decades. A newspaper survey from 2004 rated "Blade Runner" as the greatest sci-fi film of all time. Fans who might be worried about a remake can take heart: remaking the original is forbidden in the contract.

"We recognize the responsibility we have to do justice to the memory of the original with any prequel or sequel we produce," according to Alcon's statement.

Alcon Entertainment is best known for films like "The Book of Eli" and feel-good blockbuster "The Blind Side."

What do you think? Could a return to the "Blade Runner" world soar like "Star Trek?" Or will it harm the original ala "Episode 1?"
