(CBS/AP) NEW YORK - Prosecutors say a Russian immigrant has been jailed without bail in New York City after admitting he killed and dismembered his roommate.

Sergey Mamonov appeared in court Wednesday to face a second-degree murder charge in the death of 55-year-old Aleksandr Zilbergleyt.

A criminal complaint says the 50-year-old Mamonov told police he beat his roommate to death during a fight on March 25, and then carved up his body.

NYPD detectives went to the Brooklyn home earlier this week in response to a tip that the roommate was missing. According to CBS New York, when police arrived, they reportedly found Mamonov watching television.

Authorities say Mamonov tried to dissolve the body in vats of bleach, some of which were found in the apartment's refrigerator, the station reports.
