Regular Sales Machine readers know that I make few personal appearances, even virtual ones. However, I've recently been working with the Chally Group on a book project and they asked me to be a guest on a webinar about sales process.

Asking me about sales process is pretty ironic, considering that my view on the subject is that, most of the time, sales process gets in the way of finding out the customer's buying process. (They're two very different things.) Also, the other two speakers are well-regarded academics who've actually studied sales process (as opposed to bloviating in a blog, which is what I do.)

What it is and isn't ... what does and doesn't work. Per Wikipedia--A sales process, also known as a sales tunnel or a sales funnel, is a systematic approach to selling a product or service. Based on a review of the web-a "sales process" can be as simple as having a list of prospects and following a logical process from suspect identification to servicing and supporting clients.

Or, with Sales Force Automation and CRM they can become very complex and sophisticated processes/systems that not only track the traditional selling process but can also become very complex revenue prediction models with high degree of precision at each level.
