Atlanta federal building evacuated due to suspicious backpack

A federal building in Atlanta that was evacuated on Monday, Sept. 19, 2016, after a suspicious backpack was found.

ATLANTA — U.S. Marshals have evacuated the federal building at 75 Spring Street in downtown Atlanta, reports CBS affiliate WGCL.

A backpack was discovered near a trashcan on the side of the building by a security officer around 9:30 a.m., Monday, according to authorities.

Staff were evacuated from offices and courtrooms in all 23 floors of the building.

Atlanta Police Bomb Disposal Unit responded to the scene and deployed the bomb robot. The backpack was removed from the trash can for further inspection.
