Arraignment scheduled for alleged White House shooter
(CBS) WASHINGTON - A formal arraignment is scheduled Tuesday for an Idaho man charged with firing multiple shots at the White House in an attempt at assassinating the president.
CNN reports Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez is expected to enter a plea on the 17 charges he faces in federal court in Washington on Tuesday.
Ortega-Hernandez allegedly fired a rifle at the White House on November 11 and fled. President Obama was out of town at the time of the incident.
According to a federal indictment, Ortega-Hernandez "did forcibly assault, intimidate, and interfere" with three Secret Service employees by firing his gun. Several rounds hit the exterior second floor of the White House residence area.
Ortega-Hernandez was arrested five days later in Indiana, Pennsylvania, and has been jailed ever since. Last month, a federal judge ruled that the suspect is competent to stand trial.
David Bos, a federal public defender representing Ortega-Hernandez, has said his client will enter a not guilty plea at his arraignment.
Ortega-Hernandez's charges include attempt to assassinate the president of the United States, assaulting officers of the U.S. government with a deadly weapon, injury to U.S. property, namely the White House, and use of a firearm during a crime of violence and assault with a dangerous weapon.
