Around The Horn, July 9 Edition

Cindy Sheehan’s back in the news, insurgent challengers post solid fundraising numbers, and a heroic Iraq war veteran decides not to run for a second straight time -- all in today’s roundup of the weekend that was in Congressional campaign news.

-- Anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan is planning to run against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi as an independent -- unless she introduces legislation to impeach President Bush within the next two weeks.

-- Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is talking up "bringing home the bacon" during his stops back home during Congressional recess.

-- Second-quarter fundraising numbers are beginning to trickle in: Rep. Walter Jones (R-N.C.), facing a tough primary challenge from his right, only raised $52,773 in the quarter, and has just $197,928 cash-on-hand.

Maryland GOP state senator Andrew Harris’ fundraising numbers suggest he’ll have the financial wherewithal to mount a strong conservative primary challenge against Rep. Wayne Gilchrest (R-Md.).  He raised $174,312 for the quarter, giving him $157,956 cash-on-hand.  At the end of the first quarter, Gilchrest had $323,767 in his campaign account.

And Democratic Doña Ana County Commissioner Bill McCamley, running against Rep. Steve Pearce (R-N.M.) raised $139,600 for the quarter, giving him $133,300 cash-on-hand.
