(CBS/AP) NEW YORK - Police say a teacher at a Bronx elementary school teacher has been arrested for allegedly raping a 10-year-old girl in his car.

Anthony Criscuolo was arrested Wednesday and charged with first-degree rape, predatory sexual assault against a child, attempted rape and endangering the welfare of a child, authorities said.

A Department of Education spokeswoman says the 40-year-old Criscuolo is a fifth-grade special education teacher at Public School 386.

CBS New York reports Criscuolo allegedly told the child's mother, in a letter with the school's letterhead, that he was taking the girl to an awards ceremony at a different school.

The mother reportedly notified authorities after she discovered inappropriate e-mails from the teacher to her daughter.

According to the station, the Department of Education banned Criscuolo from the school and is looking to terminate his $73,000-per-year teaching position.
