Anna Faris on weekend box office leader "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2"

The weather apparently cooperated with "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2."

In its debut weekend, Sony's animated sequel led the box office with an estimated $35 million, beating the 2009 original, which opened at $30.3 million.

Anna Faris, who voices the character Sam Sparks in the movie, told CBSNews.com that the "Cloudy" films have been really fun, adding, "It's really humbling, too. The actors in animated films are such a small part of the process. We're a huge part of the promotional process, which is just the nature of the business."

The "Mom" star also talked about the process behind making the animated film, which also features the voices of Bill Hader, James Caan, Andy Sandberg, Neil Patrick Harris and Will Forte: "It's amazing when you work on these things for a year or so. You bop in and out. You don't really understand what the visuals are going to be like at all. Then when you see the whole thing come together, it's like, 'God, that's what we were making?! That is so amazing!' It's really fun and also I love that people loved the first movie. And it's always so gratifying and amazing to get another shot at doing something people love."

"It's remarkable that it did as well as and surpassed the first film," Rory Bruer, head of distribution for Sony Pictures told The Associated Press. "The filmmakers really ratcheted it up in terms of palette and tone. It's one of those films that just draws you in. The story is fun, and there's something for the whole family."

As for the rest of the box office, last week's leader, "Prisoners," fell to second place with $11.3 million, followed by Ron Howard's "Rush," starring Chris Hemsworth. Joseph Gordon-Levitt's "Don Jon" opened at No. 5 with $9 million.
