"Second only to Superman himself, the question of who will play Lois Lane is arguably what fans have been most curious about," Snyder said in a statement Sunday, via the Hollywood Reporter. "So we are excited to announce the casting of Amy Adams, one of the most versatile and respected actresses in films today."

Adams recently was nominated for an Academy Award for her role in "The Fighter." She joins a cast featuring Henry Cavill as Superman, Diane Lane as Martha Kent and Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent.

Margot Kidder played Lois Lane in four Superman films in the 1970s and 1980s and Kate Bosworth played Lane in Bryan Singer's "Superman Returns" in 2007. Phyllis Coates played Lane in the 1951 film "Superman and the Mole-Men."

Snyder's current film is the critically-savaged "Sucker Punch."
