"America's Got Talent" kicks off with a new look
"America's Got Talent" debuted a brand new look Tuesday night with a panel of four judges: newbies Heidi Klum and Mel B (a.k.a. Scary Spice of The Spice Girls), along with returning judges Howard Stern and Howie Mandel. The season 8 changes come after Sharon Osbourne announced last year she was parting ways from the reality TV competition.
"Each and every year sets the bar for the next year," Mandel said. "People see what we see, and they get inspired. And they go, 'I can do that, but I have a better idea.'"
It's always a wild ride with the NBC show, featuring talents you didn't even know exist. But some performers really stood out on Tuesday during auditions.
Probably one of the most memorable performances of the evening came from 10-year-old singer Anna Christine, who performed The Animals' "House of the Rising Sun." Stern said, "We're looking in New York for a superstar, and I think we might've just found one." Klum, meanwhile, was in awe that she was only 10 years old, while Mel B said, "You really are something special." Mandel was equally impressed, telling the up-and-coming star that she blew his mind.
Other impressive performers included Catapult Entertainment, a mix of illusion and magic conducted by a crew of dancers. Stern, for one, was a fan of this innovative group. Illusionist Angela Hoover kept things interesting by inserting humor into her routine. Mandel called her an "excellent, perfect impressionist." And David Weathers, who kicked off the night, also left a memorable impression; he entered the stage with a live rattlesnake.
The top talents will go to Las Vegas. "America's Got Talent" will begin airing live from Radio City Music Hall in New York City starting July 23.
