Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez are the front-runners, though dozens of names have been mentioned. Internet reports about Lopez say she has signed a $12 million contract with Fox that also includes a movie deal.
The incoming judges will fill at least some of the seats vacated by Simon Cowell, Ellen DeGeneres and Kara DioGuardi and likely will join original judge Randy Jackson.
Cowell Jackson and Paula Abdul were the original judges. DioGuardi replaced Abdul and DeGeneres was added to an expanded panel last year.
Fox is making the announcement during the last of the national contestant auditions for next season, which starts in January. The tryouts are being held near Los Angeles at the Forum, former home to the L.A. Lakers.
Fox is owned by News Corp.
