American Film Institute names top movies of the year

The American Film Institute has named the coming-of-age tale "Boyhood," the sci-fi epic "Interstellar" and the civil rights drama "Selma" among its top 10 movies of the year.

AFI announced its annual picks Monday -- and actually named 11 films for its top 10 list.

The group also chose Angelina Jolie's World War II drama, "Unbroken"; the wrestling drama "Foxcatcher"; the show business satire "Birdman"; the Disney musical "Into the Woods"; the Los Angeles noir "Nightcrawler"; the jazz school drama "Whiplash"; Clint Eastwood's Navy SEAL thriller, "American Sniper"; and the World War II code-breaker tale "The Imitation Game."

Last year, seven of AFI's 10 film picks ended up snagging an Academy Award nomination for best picture.

The AFI Awards will be handed out in a luncheon on Jan. 11 in Los Angeles -- the Friday prior to the Golden Globe Awards.
