Amazon Launches Game Download Service

This story was written by Tameka Kee.

*Amazon* hasn't provided any meaningful sales info on its digital music and book downloadsbut today's launch of a downloadable games store may be an indication that the company has seen enough demand to push into new verticals.

The new service offers more than 600 casual games for $10 or less, but there aren't any titles from larger casual-games publishers like PopCap, Big Fish Games or Miniclip yet. There's also the question of whether the library will expand to include Mac-based games; Greg Hart, Amazon's VP of video games and software, told Kotaku the service would include more "mainstream" titles in the future.

The launch comes about three months after Amazon (NSDQ: AMZN) acquired casual games developer Reflexive. Reflexive had a robust downloadable games arcade on its own, and it still offers more than 1,000 titles at Reflexive.com
