Amateur Boxer Dies

A 16-year-old Fort Bend County boxer died Tuesday, two days after collapsing during a fight at the Texas Junior Olympics Amateur Boxing Championships.

El Paso police spokesman Sgt. Al Velarde said Juan Silva III, of Rosenberg, fell at the end of the second round of his bout at El Paso's Kennedy Recreational Center and was taken by helicopter to R.E. Thomason Hospital.

"He started acting strangely and then he just collapsed," Valarde said.

Silva underwent brain surgery Sunday to relieve internal bleeding but died Tuesday about 2 a.m.

Velarde said an autopsy would be performed.

Silva, who had just completed his freshman year of high school, was competing in the 139-pound open division.

He was one of two Fort Bend County boxers at the tournament representing "The Warriors for Christ Boxing Club," sponsored by the New Life Ministries in Rosenberg. Among Silva's coaches was his father, Juan.
