Alleged shooter arrested in Ill. attack that killed teen
CHICAGO -- A day after four other teens were charged in the shooting death of a Chicago high school student, a 17-year-old - the alleged shooter - was arrested as the fifth and final suspect on Monday, reports the Chicago Tribune.
Last Sunday, Skokie police found Maxwell Gadau and a 17-year-old girl in a car with gunshot wounds. Gadau was pronounced dead on the scene, while the girl was transported to a local hospital -- where she remains in critical condition.
Dzevad Avdic, Myles Hughes, Jeremy Ly, and Nicholas Smith -- all 19-years-old -- were charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder and armed robbery. Hughes, Ly and Smith were denied bail on Sunday; Avdic was denied bail on Monday.
The Skokie Police Department told the Tribune that the fifth suspect was implicated by the others and that they were not looking for anyone else.
Prosecutors say that the five suspects shot Gadau and the female victim after conspiring to steal marijunana from her. The fourth suspect, Avdic, had allegedly planned it all out -- calling Ly for an easy target, to which he gave Avdic a girl's name, according to prosecutors. Ly also allegedly added that she would "give it up easily" if Avdic had a gun.
After Avdic arranged to meet the girl, he drove Hughes, Smith and the fifth teen to the place where they were to meet, got into her car and demanded the drugs, according to prosecutors.
She refused and the fifth suspect, who has yet to be charged, allegedly shot her in the face and Gadau in the back. Assistant State's Attorney David Mullner told the Tribune that Smith took the marijuana and the five suspects drove away. The alleged attackers then smoked the marijuana.
At the bail hearing, the judge said that the attack had been unprovoked and noted that Avdic was the "planner." He had also constituted a "real and present danger" to the public and the 17-year-old victim, reports the Chicago Sun-Times.
The female victim is reportedly on a respirator and will likely need to have her jaw wired shut, Mullner said Sunday, and is expected to undergo surgery to repair her jaw and vertebrae.
She was able to identify Hughes and identified him as an associate of the gunman, Mullner told the Sun-Times.
