Four arrested in fatal shooting of Ill. high school student
CHICAGO -- Four people have been charged in a shooting that killed a Skokie, Ill. high school student and wounded another one week ago, reports CBS Chicago.
Last Sunday, Skokie police found Maxwell Gadau and a 17-year-old girl in a car with gunshot wounds. Gadau was pronounced dead on the scene, and the other victim was sent to a local hospital.
Dzevad Avdic, Myles Hughes, Jeremy Ly, and Nicholas Smith -- all 19-years-old -- were charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder and armed robbery. Hughes, Ly and Smith were denied bail on Sunday; Avdic is scheduled to appear before a judge on Monday, according to CBS Chicago.
Prosecutors say Avdic was planning a robbery and asked Ly for a good target. Ly allegedly suggested that a 17-year-old girl would be more willing to "give it up easily" if Avdic had a gun, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
But the suspects were wrong. After texting the victim to set up a drug deal, she refused to be robbed. A fifth suspect -- who has yet to be charged or arrested -- then shot her and Gadau, according to the Sun-Times.
The female victim is now on a respirator and will likely need to have her jaw wired shut, Assistant State's Attorney David Mullner told reporters Sunday. She is also expected to undergo surgery to repair her jaw and vertebrae.
She was able to identify one of the suspects and identified him as an associate of the gunman, Mullner told the newspaper.
