· Democratic challenger, Clayton Suddith left high school early to follow his father into the ironworker trade. After serving in Korea, he returned home and completed his high school equivalency degree. Years later, he took various college courses at West Virginia University and the Clinical Pastoral Education program of the Baptist Medical Center in Birmingham.

· He worked in the Ironworkers Local and was elected president of the Local and remained active in the union until he retired in 1991.

· In 1992, Suddith was elected Franklin County Commissioner for a four year term. In addition to his political career, he is known as a volunteer in the community. One of the ways he has devoted his time is by serving as the Chaplain for Franklin County for 15 years. He has spent five years volunteering in a non-denominational ministry teaching prisoners about Christianity by example of unconditional love.

· Filed his candidacy against Senator Shelby 30 minutes before the filing deadline. In order to have the necessary $7,000 to enter the race, Suddith mortgaged his truck.
