Add Sophistication To Your Hairdo
Now that the weather's heating up and humidity levels are starting to rise, you may feel your hair is getting a little out of control. So what's the best way to look polished and pretty this summer? It's all about the updo.
The Early Show's stylist David Evangelista has three different styles that can make you summer chic in no time.
"It's summer, it's all about simplicity," Evangelista says. "You can create a great-looking hairstyle without driving yourself crazy!"
The following are his suggestions:
The disheveled high bun
This look works beautifully on women with wavy hair, as they have the texture that makes the disheveled bun look a bit more disheveled and sexy.
How to do it:
- Section the hair off into 4 sections (top of head, two sides by the temples, and the back of head).
- Take the hair in the back and gather it into a high ponytail (as close to the crown of the head as possible), securing with a snag-free elastic band.
- Take the bottom ends of the hair and secure to the base of the ponytail with bobby pins, creating a sort of mini-bun at the crown of the head.
- Next, take 1/2 inches of the separated top section of the hair, and pin into the back with a bobby pin running horizontally (if you want some added height in front, tease the base of each 1/2 inch section).
- After top section of hair is pinned back, start on the sides in the same fashion; separate 1/2 sections and pull back, pinning each bit loosely to the base of the bun. Continue on both sides until all hair is pulled back and fastened to the back of the head.
The french summer twist
This look works for women with curly hair, as you can really anchor bobby pins into the hair without risk of having them slide out all over the place.
How to do it:
- Section the hair off into 3 sections (left, right, and top).
- Pull the left section towards the middle of the head, and secure the base of the left section to the head with large bobby pins, making a criss-cross effect.
- Next, pin back the top section of the hair horizontally with a large bobby pin.
- Finally, take the right side of the hair (remember, the ends of the original left section are now part of the right section of the head), twist around your fingers, and secure against the head with several large bobby pins (tuck ends of hair in towards the head, as you would in a classic french twist).
The sleek and sophisticated cluster
How to do it:
- Brush hair back smoothly and divide into two ponytails (side by side in the middle back of the head).
- Take a strand of hair that is about a dime size in diameter and curl it tightly with a curling iron. Repeat the procedure until all the hair is curled in both ponytails. If the curling iron doesn't work well for you, try rolling small strands of hair in small hot rollers. (If you have straight hair that doesn't typically hold curl well, try a curl-enhancing product - like a curling spray - to help hair retain curl).
- Take each curl in your fingers and flip it over, placing it against your head and anchor it with a matching bobby pin as shown, letting the ends hang loose. Start by placing the curls between the two ponytails, blending them together by inter-mingling the curls.
- Next proceed to the outside edges, then fill in so that the bobby pins and bands are hidden. If your hair curls easily and is of medium length (only extending about two or three inches past the ponytail band), you may need only a few bobby pins since the curls will stay in place on their own.
