A House Divided

To most Americans, polygamy went out with the covered wagon. But the practice still exists, and in some parts of the West, it thrives. There are about 60,000 polygamists in the United States, about half of them in Utah, where until 1890, it was legal.

48 Hours takes a look at this unusual practice and spends time with polygamous families, as well as those who oppose polygamy and say it is harmful.

Runaways: Correspondent Erin Moriarty reports on Kathy and Sarah, two teen-age girls who run away from their polygamous families.

Sect's Pull Is Strong: Kathy and Sarah find that life outside their insular sect can be both intoxicating and overwhelming. Will they go back?

Prosecutor vs. The Polygamist: Correspondent Troy Roberts reports on Tom Green, a man with five wives and 25 kids. His outspoken support of polygamy could land him in jail for 25 years.

A Day In The Life: Minister Steve Butt invites Correspondent Susan Spencer into his Utah home to see for herself what life with three wives is really like.
