70 Yr. Old Woman Hitches Ride to Bank, Robs Bank, Hitches Getaway Ride, Say Minn. Cops
JANESVILLE, Minn. (CBS/AP) A 26-year-old man in southern Minnesota thought he was doing a good deed when he gave a 70-year-old woman a ride to the bank.
But police say the woman, Sandra Leann Bathke, robbed the bank instead, and the man was her unsuspecting getaway driver - in a Jaguar.
The would-be Good Samaritan told The Free Press of Mankato that he thought the woman, who rents an apartment from his mother, was going to the bank to withdraw cash to pay her rent last week.
Instead, employees of the Elysian State Bank reported that an elderly woman told the teller she had a gun, demanded money and left with $3,700, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
Bathke then allegedly got into a Jaguar, driven by good-deed-doer Luke Even Weimert.
The bank's vice president followed the car for about 8 miles and called police to give them the car's description and license plate number, according to the Star Tribune.
Police stopped the car and took both robber and driver into custody, before determining the woman acted alone.
The Star Tribune reports Bathke was charged Thursday with first- and second-degree aggravated robbery, simple robbery and theft - all felonies.
