6 killed, officer hurt in crash near Ohio capital

UPPER ARLINGTON, Ohio A car and a police cruiser collided at an intersection just north of Ohio's capital early Friday, killing six people and injuring an officer, officials said.

An officer from the Columbus suburb of Upper Arlington was responding to a robbery report when the overnight crash occurred at an intersection, said Jason Pappas, head of the local police union. The officer apparently had his vehicle's police lights and siren on at the time, Pappas said.

CBS Affiliate WBNS reports the car's male driver and five female passengers were killed, including a young child. Police believe none of them was wearing a seat belt. WBNS also reports there was no child seat in the car.

Their names and ages weren't immediately released.

The officer was being treated for a serious head injury at a hospital but was in stable condition.

The crash closed the intersection along a major commuter route, but all lanes of Fishinger Road and the southbound lanes of Riverside Drive reopened shortly before 7:00 a.m.
