500 lb. pig bolts minivan, gets tasered, then shot dead by Wash. trooper

CBS

(CBS/AP) - A Washington State Patrol trooper tasered, then shot and killed a 500-pound pig that escaped from a minivan through a broken window Friday.

Trooper Morgan Mehaffey eyed the pig running down a Spokane Valley sidewalk after seeing the owner's van driving erratically with a broken window, reports the Spokane-Review. The owner of the pig reportedly got out of the vehicle and attempted to catch it, but it knocked her down and ran off.

Mehaffey herded the pig out of traffic with his patrol car and enlisted volunteers to help catch the animal.

Mehaffey first attempted to slow the animal with his stun gun so volunteers could rope it, but it was not fazed by the attempt. Eventually the trooper shot the pig at the owner's request.

"As soon as the pig got loose, the lady said, 'Shoot it,'" Mehaffey said according to the Spokane-Review.

Mehaffey says the owner had just purchased the pig and intended to use it for breeding.
