(CBS/WCBS/AP) NEW YORK - A 4-year-old boy is in the hospital after being shot in the chest by a teen trying to steal his father's coat on a Bronx street Tuesday.

According to CBS station WCBS, the child's father was walking the boy home to the women's shelter where he lives with his mother when two men tried to rob them. There was a struggle and the boy was shot.

Police said the father was able to get the gun away from one of the alleged muggers and ran after them, allegedly shooting one teen in the back of the head.

Police said 17-year-old Mauricio Acosta was arrested Wednesday on charges of attempted robbery, weapons possession and felonious assault, according to the Associated Press.

The teen was listed in critical condition at Saint Barnabas Hospital. The little boy was transferred from St. Barnabas Hospital to Columbia-Presbyterian. Investigators say he has lost consciousness three times.

Police are now questioning the father.
