2 Dead In Miami Mall Shooting

Two men were shot to death Thursday morning in an apparent murder-suicide at a coffee shop in a suburban Miami mall, reports CBS station WFOR-TV in Miami.

Police said the two men had been talking about a woman when the exchange heated up and the younger of the two men shot the other before turning the weapon on himself.

The body of the older man, described as in his 50s, was found outside the glass-fronted, second-floor Starbuck's near a big movie theater and a jungle-theme restaurant in the upscale Aventura Mall in North Miami.

A weapon, identified by police as a black semiautomatic pistol, was found beside the corpse of the second man, who was described as aged between 30 and 40. Neither the men nor the woman were identified.

"It does now appear that it was a homicide-suicide that is domestic related," Aventura police spokesman Skip Washa said.

The shooting reportedly occurred at around 9:45 a.m. ET, just after the mall opened to the public.

Five or six shots were fired, witnesses told police.

"We got a call from Starbucks, we got a call from the Disney Store next door, we got a number of calls from inside the mall," said Miami-Dade Police Detective Pat Brickman.

Police initially feared another shooter was involved and closed the 82-acre mall, while black-helmeted officers carrying assault weapons conducted a search. They emptied stores during what had been expected to be a heavy shopping day on the U.S. Veterans Day holiday. Scores of shoppers were locked inside the mall for more than two hours during the search.

The palm-fringed, pastel-colored mall features department stores like Macy's, Bloomingdale's, Lord & Taylor, Burdines, J.C. Penney and many smaller stores.
