2 College Students Killed In Van Rollover
A van carrying students from Bowling Green State University in Ohio overturned on the Indiana Toll Road early Wednesday morning, killing two women.
The road about 45 miles north of Fort Wayne in northeast Indiana was covered with snow at the time, but Indiana State Police Cpl. Derek Fisher could not say if the weather contributed to the crash.
Fisher said there were six people in the rental van, which rolled over and stopped in the median of the road, ejecting two female students, ages 25 and 26, who were killed.
The van was carrying international students returning from a trip to Chicago over the holiday break, said Teri Sharp, a Bowling Green State University spokeswoman. Other information on the group wasn't immediately available, she said.
One of the women was pronounced dead at the scene; the other was pronounced dead after being taken to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne. No names were released, pending notification of families.
The other four students in the vehicle were male. Two suffered minor head injuries and were taken to Cameron Memorial Community Hospital in Angola for treatment. The other two were not injured.
All of the van's occupants were in their mid-20s.
The crash occurred about 12:20 a.m. as the van was traveling east near Orland. The van rolled several times and landed on its roof.
Orland Fire Department spokesman Kim Norton said crews used a winch to roll the van upright and found one of the victims underneath the vehicle.
The second victim was struck by another vehicle in the westbound lanes, Fisher said.
The Indiana Toll Road was closed in both directions as emergency crews responded to the crash, but it has since reopened.
State Police reported that the toll road was snow covered from the Illinois line to the Ohio line Wednesday morning.
