$1M in Jewels Robbed from Calif. Store

Authorities say thieves drilled through the wall of a San Juan Capistrano jewelry store, dismantled the security system and made off with a safe filled with up to $1 million in jewels.

The Orange County Sheriff's Department says the robbery happened either late Tuesday or early Wednesday at Mission Jewelers, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Thieves tunneled in through the shared wall of a vacant shop next door and left through the back door of the jewelry store, after taking apart a metal security gate.

Investigators say it probably took more than one person to move the 1,000-pound safe.

Authorities gathered some evidence at the scene as well as surveillance video.
