1996 Crash Victims Remembered
This is a difficult day for families and friends who lost loved ones in the TWA Flight 800 disaster.
The Boeing 747 exploded four years ago Monday after takeoff from New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport. A private ceremony is planned to remember the 230 people who died when the plane went down off Long Island.
Loved ones gathered Sunday to break ground for a new memorial on the shore, not far from where the plane crashed.
About 50 families - some from as far away as Australia - took part.
They hope to have the memorial built by next summer. Its centerpiece will be a 12-foot granite wall with the names of the victims.
