14-year-old Philadelphia boy charged with murder after joyride ends in fatality, say prosecutors

(CBS/KYW/AP) PHILADELPHIA - A 14-year-old Philadelphia boy was charged with murder after allegedly taking his mother's car for an early-morning joyride that ended in a fatal crash, prosecutors say.

According to investigators, 14-year-old Winston Charleston took his mother's Chrysler Sebring without her knowledge Thursday. Three other teens were also in the car with him as he allegedly sped off without his headlights on, reports CBS station KYW.

Police say Charleston ran a red light around 2 a.m. and crashed head-on into a red Volkswagen. He then hit a second car carrying two passengers.

A 22-year-old man in the Volkswagen, identified by police as Daniel Fouracre, was killed in the crash and several others were hospitalized.

Fouracre's girlfriend, who was driving, and two of the teens riding with Charleston were hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries, reports KYW.

Charleston has been charged with murder, aggravated assault, involuntary manslaughter, homicide by vehicle and other charges.

Police are testing the 14-year-old driver to determine if alcohol or drugs may have been a factor.
