14-year-old Kan. boy allegedly shoots and kills his father, report says

(CBS/AP) SHAWNEE, Kan. - Police in a northeast Kansas community have detained a 14-year-old boy in connection with his father's fatal shooting on Tuesday.

According to CBS affiliate KCTV, the shooting happened during a custody exchange between the father, and the boy's mother, who was near where the shooting occurred.

The boy allegedly approached the vehicle his father was in and shot him with a handgun while his mother and stepfather were inside a business.

The boy reportedly told his mother and stepfather what he did and they called 911.

The station reports the mother and the boy's stepfather are being questioned.

The motive for the killing and details about the firearm were not disclosed.

According to KCTV, the teen is in police custody, and authorities have yet to determine if he will be charged as an adult or a juvenile.

Names of the teen and others involved have not been released.
