100 confirmed dead on sunken Russia cruise boat

KAZAN, Russia - A government statement says the death toll from Sunday's sinking of a cruise vessel on the Volga River has risen to 100.

The Russian Emergency Situations Ministry said in a statement Wednesday that some 200 divers are still scouring the river for the bodies of 29 more people that remain missing.

Officials said Tuesday that the 55-year-old double-decker boat, the Bulgaria, was overloaded when it sank, but they have not yet determined the cause of the incident.

A criminal negligence investigation was opened Tuesday into the sinking, and two ships that allegedly sailed past the tragedy without bothering to help.
