The 5 Foods That Will Age Your Skin Faster

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- It's Get Movin' Monday on the WCCO Morning Show. To kick off each work week, we bring in Health Magazine's "Next Fitness Star" and Tiger Athletics owner Stacie Clark to help you keep your fitness goals.

As the saying goes, you are what you eat. And this week, Jamie Yuccas talked with Clark about the foods that can cause your skin to age faster than it should.

"We have to remember, when it comes to our skin, what we put inside our body is just as important as what we apply to the surface," Clark said, before talking about the five types of foods you should avoid.

One: Refined Carbs & Sugars

Refined carbs refers to carbs that are not in their natural state -- as they would be in fruits, for instance -- but have been processed or even manufactured using chemicals. This covers many of the pre-packaged snack foods.

"The bad thing is, we try to reward ourselves with those," Clark said.

Two: Salt

"Salt creates water retention," Clark said. "It makes you look tired and dehydrated and your eyes and body are puffy. A quick tip: the more water you drink, the more water you release."

Clark said that one other handy tip regarding water consumption is you should aim to drink as many ounces per day as half your body's weight in pounds. So if you weigh 120 pounds, you should try to drink 60 ounces.

Three: Caffeine

This one will be difficult for many working people or anyone who enjoys multiple sodas per day. Clark said that having one or two cups of coffee per day is OK, but if you're starting to drift into consuming three to five cups or more, that's when it may start impacting your skin health.

Four: Alcohol

Once again, moderation is key. Clark suggested if you're going to have a glass of wine with dinner, follow it up with a glass of water. She also said that alcohol can lead to a breakdown in collagen, which can lead to more wrinkles.

Five: Fried Foods

Unhealthy fats release free radicals inside the body, Clark said, which leads to clogged pores. The healthy fats to opt for instead include olive oils and avocados.
