Get Movin' Monday: Best Buys For February
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The Super Bowl may be over, but the Super Bowl sales on TVs continue. They're one of the great deals you can find during the month of February.
John Ewoldt of the Star Tribune talked about some of the other steals this month, from sweet treats to big ticket items.
It's been awhile since Minnesotans have needed a snow blower, but with plenty of winter left if you're in the market, now is the time to buy.
"Whenever we have a lack of snow, that's the time when dealers are overstocked, so come middle February or later you're definitely going to see markdowns," Ewoldt said. "There are not going to be huge markdowns because snow blowers have very little margin, but you should expect to see a minimum of $25, and if you see over $100 that's doing pretty well."
Were you a bad boy or girl over the holidays and didn't get that TV on your wish list? You're in luck. The Super Bowl brings about a second round of TV bargains.
"We're still in kind of a Super Bowl halo here and that means that $300 is the new sweet spot for two different sizes," Ewoldt said. "The 42-inch you can get for $300 for a name brand 42-inch TV and for an off-brand 55-inch, that surprisingly is $300 also, so that's the price tag to be looking for these days."
Rumors about a new MacBook Air may bring lower prices on older models.
"They're saying by the end of February there may be a new 12-inch MacBook Air Retina, which means that all of those previous models will then start going down in price," Ewoldt said. "Now it may not happen at the Apple Store, but you need to check the secondary stores like Best Buy, for example, because they will start discounting those."
Valentine's Day is near. Of course, you can find discounted holiday candy the day after at major retailers like Target and Walgreens, but Ewoldt said don't overlook the specialty chocolatiers.
"If you want higher-end chocolate, even a place like Chocolate Celeste in St. Paul, she will have anywhere from 30 to 50 percent off on her Valentine-themed chocolate. And for chocolate lovers like us, that's a dream come true," he said.
Another holiday in February: Presidents Day, when the best bargains can be found in the thrift store. Presidents' Day is Monday, Feb. 16.
"Locally that is going to be a great day to go to any of the thrift stores -- Arc's Value Village, Goodwill, Savers -- they all have 50 percent off virtually all of their store Presidents Day and other holidays too, so that means all of their clothing some of their stores will have it. Some of them, their household items too," he said. "It's a very popular sale, and if you're going, plan to be able to spend time online."
There are sales across all department stores and for online retailers. So if you have something you've been wanting to buy, Ewoldt suggested holding off until a week before President's Day and even a week after because there is a good chance the price will drop.
