Curiocity: My Top 5 New Foods At The Minnesota State Fair
Time to double the workouts.
This year's feast of the Minnesota State Fair's new foods proved to be both plentiful and oh-so-delectable. But before I let my stomach settle, why don't we re-hash my faves, calorie-by-calorie.
In no particular order ...
1. Bacon Ice Cream
Bacon + Ice Cream. Really? Do I need to say more? It's the perfect combination of salty and sweet -- a hint of smoky bacon with the perfect sweetness of cream. The pieces of candied bacon are perhaps the best part -- though I certainly could've used more ... of everything.
Five different locations, check the website for more
2. Duke's Poutine
I honestly don't even want to know how many calories are in this dish but by the looks and tastes of it, I'm guessing it's a truckload. You'll certainly want to share your poutine -- yes, even the small -- lest you go into cardiac arrest mid-chew but for those few perfect bites, it's divine.
Found on Judson Ave., next to the All-You-Can-Drink Milk Booth
3. Ragin' Ankles
I must say, with a tag like "ragin'" you might be thinking these little "ankles" will sock you with spice, but you'd be wrong. These slow-smoked, super tender pork shanks are perfectly tangy and sweet with just a hint of spice. And everything nice.
Found on the corner of W. Dan Patch Ave. and Liggett St.
4. Sweetie's Delight
I'm a sucker for anything sweet potato and over at the Mr. Potato & Sweetie stand, they're calling out to my every wish. They take mashed sweet potatoes, douse them in a light, crunchy batter and deep fry them to perfection. They're then served with more sweet -- whipped cream and powdered sugar.
Found on Liggett St., east of the Horse Barn
5. Wine Smoothies
I can't think of anything more refreshing and more perfect for an afternoon at the Minnesota State Fair. Made with Minnesota wine, these delightful smoothies are a serious must. Personally, I think it works even better than the wine ice cream.
Found at Minnesota Wine Country, on Underwood St.
