MIAMI -- A man was fatally shot, allegedly by his son, when a family dispute in a southwest Miami-Dade home erupted in gunfire late Sunday night, police said Monday.

Kirsten Williams, 46, died after being rushed to a local hospital for treatment, police said in a written statement. Officers were called to the family's residence in the 29000 block of SW 162 Avenue shortly after 9:30 p.m. Sunday night for reports of gunfire.

When they arrived, police Williams suffering from a gunshot wound, police said.

Investigators said the incident began with a family argument. At some point, the man's 23-year-old son got involved in the dispute and pulled out a gun, according to a police spokesman.

Williams also allegedly pulled out a gun and the two exchanged gunfire, according to police. The son was not hurt during the incident, investigators said.

Homicide detectives were talking to the man's wife and her son before deciding what charges, if any, would be filed.

A bystander said he heard up to a dozen gunshots.

"I'm in my friends just hanging out here in the backyard and we heard about like 10 shots go off,"  said Anthony Hernandez. "So we are ran inside so I'd like a little bit of smoke going up in the air and in about like 10 minutes the cops were here."
